Belt conveyors are used to transport crushed and screened products in plants

What Is a Belt Conveyor and How Does It Work?

A belt conveyor is a system in which an endless belt, tensioned between drive and tail pulleys, runs over carrying idlers and transports material. The drive pulley is turned by a motor and gear reducer; the take-up keeps the belt tensioned against slip.

It is the most economical continuous transport solution between machines in crushing plants, in stockyards and at loading points.

Applications

  • Transport between crushers, screens and stockpiles
  • Radial and fixed stacking conveyors
  • Loading and dispatch lines
  • Mining and mineral plants

Selection Checklist

  • Belt width and speed calculated for capacity (conveyor calculation)
  • Belt type and ply count chosen for material and tension
  • Inclination limited so material does not roll back
  • Belt cleaning, skirt rubber and safety devices planned

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does a conveyor belt run off (mistrack)?

Misaligned idlers and pulleys, off-centre loading, carry-back and uneven tension are the main causes.

How is conveyor motor power calculated?

From capacity, belt speed, conveyor length, lift and friction losses; see our conveyor calculation guide.
