Aurox backing compound (also called Aurox crusher liner backing) is a two-component epoxy-based backing material offered by CSP Mühendislik as its own brand, developed to fill the gaps behind crusher wear liners. It is designed to support wear parts in large gyratory crushers, cone crushers and grinding mills, providing high compressive strength and impact resistance.
In this guide we look at what Aurox backing compound does, which equipment it is used in, its key properties, correct application steps, points to consider when choosing a product, and frequently asked questions. For the general principles of backing materials, see also our crusher backing compound guide.
What Does Backing Compound Do?
In cone and gyratory crushers, the mantle (moving crushing surface) and the concave (bowl liner) are manganese steel castings. Because of casting tolerances, irregular gaps remain between the back face of these parts and the supporting surfaces (head, bowl, shell). If these gaps are not filled:
- The liner contacts only at certain points and crushing forces concentrate there,
- The liner flexes in unsupported areas and cracks or breaks,
- The liner loosens, knocks and hammers the seating surfaces of the head and bowl,
- The crusher setting becomes unstable and unplanned stoppages increase.
Aurox backing compound is poured into these gaps and, once cured, forms a solid bed that supports the liner at every point. Impact and vibration are spread over a wide area and the liner can be used safely up to its designed wear limit.
Key Properties of Aurox Backing Compound
| Property | Benefit in the Field |
|---|---|
| Two-component epoxy system | Resin and hardener are mixed and poured on site; no melting equipment needed |
| High compressive strength | Supports the liner without being crushed under crushing forces |
| High impact strength | Absorbs impact energy, reduces vibration and protects the liner and supporting surfaces |
| Suitable viscosity | Easy mixing and a controlled pour that fills gaps from the bottom up |
| Engineered for cold regions | Keeps its strength and reliability in low-temperature environments |
Exact technical values (mix ratio, pot life, cure time, application temperature range and strength values) are given in the product’s technical data sheet. For the current data sheet and safety data sheet (SDS) before application, contact us.
Where Is It Used?
- Cone crushers: Filling the gaps between mantle and head, and between concave and bowl. For where and when it is applied, see our mantle and concave replacement guide.
- Gyratory (primary) crushers: Behind the concave segments and under the mantle. See our gyratory crusher guide for details.
- Grinding mills: Applications where liners and wear parts need support (depending on mill and liner design). We cover liner maintenance in our SAG mill and ball mill guides.
Note: The wear parts of jaw, impact and vertical shaft (VSI) crushers are secured with bolts, wedges or locking systems; backing compound is not used in these crushers. Some modern cone crushers are also designed with backing-free liners. The crusher manufacturer’s instructions always take precedence.
Applying Aurox Backing Compound
- Preparation and planning: The quantity required is determined for the crusher model and a safety margin is added. For the calculation method see our backing quantity calculation guide.
- Surface cleaning: Old backing, oil, dust and loose material are completely removed from the surfaces of the head, bowl and liners that the backing will contact.
- Seating the liner: The mantle or concave is fully seated and secured according to the manufacturer’s instructions (head nut, U-bolts, etc.). Backing does not seat the liner; it only fills the gaps.
- Dams and sealing: Lower edges and holes where backing could escape are sealed with putty, foam or a suitable dam material.
- Temperature control: The material and crusher parts are brought to the application temperature given in the data sheet. In cold weather, parts and material are warmed beforehand (cold-weather application guide).
- Mixing: The whole of the resin and hardener is mixed in the packaged ratio with a low-speed mixer until a uniform colour is obtained. Never mix part kits.
- Pouring: The mix is poured immediately, from a single point and without interruption, so that it fills the gap from the bottom up and pushes the air ahead of it. On large crushers, kits are prepared simultaneously.
- Curing: The crusher is not loaded until the cure time given in the data sheet has elapsed. A small sample from the same mix can be used as a reference to check the cure.
Common Mistakes
| Mistake | Consequence | Prevention |
|---|---|---|
| Preparing too little material | An interrupted pour, layered and weak backing | Calculate the volume, add a safety margin |
| Partial or off-ratio mixing | Backing that stays soft and does not cure | Mix the whole kit |
| Pouring onto cold parts | Gaps not filled, longer cure | Warm the parts and the material |
| Running before cure is complete | Backing is crushed, the liner loosens and cracks | Follow the data sheet time |
| Dirty or oily surfaces | Porous backing that does not bond | Clean surfaces thoroughly |

Aurox or Nordbak?
Both brands offer epoxy backing products used to support liners in cone and gyratory crushers. The deciding factors are the crusher manufacturer’s recommendation, crusher size and operating conditions, application temperature, lead time and total cost. Because CSP Mühendislik supplies both brands, we can choose the right product for your crusher and site conditions together. As Aurox is CSP’s own brand, stock planning and technical support are handled directly by our team.
Safety
- Epoxy resins and hardeners can cause irritation and sensitisation on contact with skin and eyes; wear gloves, safety glasses and suitable work clothing.
- Read the product’s safety data sheet (SDS) before application and follow its ventilation requirements.
- Large masses heat up while curing; do not touch fresh backing.
- Lock out and tag out before working inside the crusher (occupational safety guide).
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Aurox backing compound?
A two-component epoxy-based backing material that fills the gaps behind wear liners in cone and gyratory crushers and grinding mills. It is CSP Mühendislik’s own brand.
Is Aurox backing compound used in jaw crushers?
No. Jaw crusher plates are secured with wedges and bolts; backing compound is for cone and gyratory crushers and suitable mill applications.
Can it be applied in cold weather?
Aurox is engineered to keep its performance in cold regions; even so, during application the material and parts must be within the temperature range given in the data sheet.
How much Aurox do I need?
It depends on the crusher model and the gap volume between liner and body. Send us your crusher model and serial number and we will calculate it together.
How is old backing removed?
At a liner change, the old backing comes out with the liner; epoxy backing softens with heat. Surfaces must be completely cleaned of residue before the next pour.
